Photo Sharing Do’s and Don’ts
Everyone loves showing photos of things they love: a new baby, a new puppy, a new spouse... the list goes on and on. When our Bernese Mountain dog Ollie about 3 years ago, I was a doting father and was always showed off pictures on my phone, facebook and instagram.
When our little boy was born, I had an important realization. As much as I love our little boy, one great picture is more valuable to friends than several (or MANY) good pictures.
I instituted the “One photo rule”.
One photo a week on any social media and one photo when I am talking about G.
Social media:I do not like to dictate how my child will or will not use social media in the future, so I try my best to limit the social media footprint that I create: One photo or one post a week.
Sharing real time:I have found that when I am speaking to someone from work or in social setting, I will share one recent “best” photo. This keeps me from going down the rabbit hole of searching for the “best” photo of G and over sharing. If the person who I am sharing with wants to see more, I will gladly share more, but this statisfies about 75% of people I speak to.
The other option: Tiny Beans aka Grandparents best friend: Tiny Beans is a freemium app that allows you to upload pictures daily and keep track of them in handy calendar views. You can share the photos by granting family (and friends if you wish) in the app. Family does not have a smart phone? No problem. Tiny beans sends a dail “digest” of all the photos that were posted the day before. The app reminds you to upload in the evenings too, so you can have a daily record and no more angry emails from grandparents asking for the most recent photos. My parents have started a morning ritual around checking tiny beans.
